There are so many wonderful things to do around Kellyville and today we’re turning our attention to the best picnic spots. Take your pick and enjoy a picnic lunch with a side of history, flora, fauna or sports.

Turkeys Nest Reserve

Located next door to Kellyville in Beaumont Hills, Turkeys Nest is the best place to see the sunset towards Blue Mountains National Park. During the day, from its higher elevation, you’ll still find some of the best views in The Hills. Here’s what else you’ll find at Turkeys Next:

  • Covered picnic tables with barbecue facilities.
  • A picturesque pond with a viewing platform, where kids can feed the local ducks.
  • A small playground.
  • Lots of open grassed area with shaded trees that’s perfect for a scenic picnic.
  • Walking paths around the pond, if you want to walk off your picnic!

Castle Hill Heritage Park Reserve

Castle Hill is another next-door neighbour that’s home to the sprawling Castle Hill Heritage Park Reserve. It has 20 hectares of rolling landscaped hills and shady forest. In fact, it’s home to one of the world’s only remaining stands of Blue Gum High Forest. The park also includes:

  • A large playground for kids.
  • Barbecue facilities and covered picnic tables.
  • Plenty of open and shaded green space for a picnic.
  • Public toilet facilities.
  • Numerous walking trails (the main track is accessible).

The birthplace of Castle Hill, you can learn about the reserve’s mark on history by following the interpretative signage along the main concrete walking track.

Bella Vista Farm

Nestled in neighbouring Bella Vista is Bella Vista Farm, a culturally significant historic farm complex. Set on 20 hectares, it was established in the late 1700s. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the surrounding grounds, which include a playground, barbecue and picnic facilities, and walking trails.

The Friends of Bella Vista Farm hold open days on the first Sunday of every month. You can do a tour of the two-storey hilltop homestead and other farm buildings before enjoying your picnic while being serenaded by the Hills Shire Symphony Orchestra. Sounds like the perfect Sunday to us!

Balcombe Heights Estate

Balcombe Heights Estate has something for everyone. Let’s start with the heritage buildings from its time as the William Thompson Masonic School. Several are still intact, including the Georgian Revival-style administrative building.

Then take a walk down the memorial tree avenue of Brush Box and visit the war memorial, sundial, fishpond and memorial garden (filled with white roses, rosemary and westringia). But wait, there’s more:

  • The Hills Shire’s main skate park.
  • Multiple sporting fields.
  • Barbecue and picnic facilities.
  • A playground with a liberty swing.
  • Walking and cycling paths.
  • A fenced off-leash dog area.

It’s easy to turn your picnic lunch into an all-day affair at Balcombe Heights Estate.

Featherdale Wildlife Park

Now, Featherdale Wildlife Park is a 30-minute drive from Kellyville. But can anything beat having a picnic surrounded by cute Australian animals? We think not! Featherdale has two shady picnic areas where you can enjoy your own picnic lunch. After your picnic, you can feed the wallabies, say hello to the farmyard animals and even get a photo with a koala. We think this wins the award for the best picnic spot around Kellyville.
