When preparing your home for sale, you want to incorporate these six key elements of interior design to style your home to perfection. This will help to put you ahead of the competition and will make your styled home stand out from the rest..

Scale

Making sure that your interior encompasses the scale principle means that you need to select pieces of furniture that fit the size of the room.

You also want to ensure that each piece fits well with all the other pieces so that there is not one piece that dominates the styling and takes the whole picture out of balance.

For example, if there’s a large bare wall in the room, match it with a large piece of artwork. A small painting would simply look out of place.

In other words, large rooms demand larger pieces of furniture and furnishings such as rugs. On the other hand, smaller rooms need more diminutive pieces of furniture and smaller rugs.

Focus

Focus is all about drawing the eye to a single focal point within a room. This is a space that you immediately see when you enter a room.

This could be a large picture window or a stunning fireplace with a gorgeous mantle. Alternatively, you could use a stately piece of furniture or a simple artwork to create the focal point in your room.

When choosing a focal point, consider either the size, colour or texture of the element to make it stand out from the rest of the room.

Another tip from top designers is to select your focus pieces first and then style the entire room around this focal point.

Balance

A balanced room needs to look and feel good and be aesthetically pleasing. You’ll find that there are three types of balance that can be created in a room.

Symmetrical balance is when the pieces in the room are centred, and each side is a mirror image of the other.

Asymmetrical balance is a little different in that there is no mirror image in the room. To achieve this kind of balance, key pieces are set off-centre and balanced with different pieces of furniture that are somewhat similar in size.

Radial balance is another form of balance and means that you create a circle around a central point. For example, a round dining table set on a slightly larger-sized rug underneath a stunning light fitting.

Harmony

The harmony principle revolves primarily around how a room feels. In other words, it’s not a concrete aspect but rather how the room makes you feel when you walk into it.

Harmony is achieved when all the individual elements in a room work seamlessly together and just look like they belong together.

Harmony can often be achieved by using the three-colour principle that is so important in superior interior styling. This means that you use a maximum of only three colours within the home.

The main colour will cover the larger areas like the walls and ceilings. You can then offset this using another complementary shade as the floor covering and the window furnishings.

These two colours are then spiced up by using a third colour in the decorative pieces in the room such as cushions, throw blankets and even light fittings. You can use different shades of the same colour but just make sure that they all blend well together.

Rhythm

Rhythm is all about how all the individual elements in a room work together to tell a story. The easiest way to achieve this is with repetition. This could be in the shapes that you select or the colours.

Even certain motifs can be used to create repetition. Think of things like palm leaf motifs on cushions that are repeated in a piece of artwork and complemented with a live indoor palm plant.

Contrast

In general, the contrast elements will help to soften the space of each room that you’re styling. For example, you could use some round pieces of furniture in a room that is dominated by square pieces such as a fireplace or a large bookcase.

Alternatively, you could create some contrast by using large pieces of artwork that add a pop of colour and really catch the eye.

Living plants are excellent for adding contrast, especially if the space is dominated by lots of white, such as in a kitchen.

When you bring these 6 key elements together, your home will be styled to perfection and you can expect lots of interested buyers streaming to your door.
