The Hills is known as Sydney’s garden shire, so it makes sense to bring out the best in your garden when selling, especially at this time of year.
Don’t forget that this part of your property needs to make a good impression with buyers so set aside some time to bring it to life and follow some of our tips to do so:
Why fix up your garden to sell?
Aside from the fact that your Kellyville home needs to live up to its reputation as part of Sydney’s garden shire, the garden is also one of the first things prospective buyers see when they visit your home.
Many buyers will have a peek or drive past your place even before they can come to a home open, and an untidy and overgrown garden will put them off. Many prospective buyers will assume that any home with an unkempt garden will be similarly neglected inside.
When buyers see a well-kept, neat and pretty garden, they get the right first impression, which is very important for a successful sale.
Getting started
One of the best ways to get your garden looking bright and beautiful is to add some fresh plants.
September is an excellent time for planting in Sydney, especially native flowering plants. Here are some gorgeous native flowering plants that you could consider planting this spring:
- Bottlebrush: These iconic Aussie shrubs flower from spring to summer but can flower anytime if pruned correctly. Bottlebrush are hardy plants, they are low maintenance and they come in a variety of colours to brighten up any garden.
- Coastal rosemary is another tough shrub whose pretty flowers bloom throughout spring. Their flowers are white or blue/mauve, and they grow well in Sydney suburbs.
- Correas make for an excellent clipped hedge. Their bell-shaped flowers, which bloom into September, are another excellent way to add colour to your garden.
- Fan flower is perfect for ground cover or for trailing over the edge of containers. The dainty flowers come in blue, mauve, pink or white, so you have a range of options to match your garden.
- Grevillea: Another Aussie favourite that blooms from winter to spring, grevillea will brighten up any garden and give it some native flair.
More tips
Adding more plants isn’t all it takes to make your garden look its best.
Here are a few quick ways to give your garden a facelift so your home sells faster and for a better price:
- Take a photograph: One of the first things potential buyers will see of your home is pictures on your real estate agent’s website. Take a picture yourself and have a look at what is working and what isn’t. Take out any plants that might be obscuring desirable features of the home and or anything else that makes the garden look overgrown or cluttered.
- Tidy and prune: The quickest way to make your garden look fresh and manicured is simply to tidy it up. Sweep pavers. Mow the lawn. Prune shrubs and bushes and throw down some fresh mulch. Weed flower beds. Get rid of any rubbish or other bits and pieces that might be lying around and you’ll start to wish you hadn’t decided to sell!
- Add pots: If you don’t want to plant plants or you don’t have a lot of soil to use, you can still add greenery by picking up some potted plants from your local nursery and strategically placing them around the garden.
- Lawn: Fresh turf can easily be rolled out over tired-looking grass to make your lawn look fresher and more appealing.
- Pressure hose pavers: The plant life isn’t the only part of your garden that will need attention. Give all your pavers a good hose down with a pressure washer to eliminate any dirt, moss or mould.
