What’s happening locally over the festive season?
This Saturday, December 16, right here in Kellyville is Christmas in the Park at Barryville Reserve in North Kellyville from 11am until 2pm. Hosted by Kellyville Rural Fire Brigade, there’s a free sausage sizzle, Santa making an appearance at 12.30pm, and fire trucks on display. Bring a picnic and have a go at shooting some water from the live reels.
And on Sunday December 17, there are Christmas carols on the lawn of the Kellyville Anglican Church. Meet there from 5.30pm with the carols starting at 7pm. This is another family friendly event and everyone is welcome.
Sydney Zoo’s Christmas Animal Kingdom looks like a lot of fun for the little ones. With a Magical Snow Lane and snow slide, Candyland where you can decorate your own gingerbread, and an elves’ workshop, the kids will be entertained before they even get to the animals. Santa will be there for photos and every child receives a free gift.
The Zoo itself is absolutely fantastic, with a ferris wheel and lots of animal encounters.
Illuminate the Hills 2023 is another family event and this one is free for all. Every night at 7pm from now until Tuesday, January 2, Roxborough Park Rose Garden will be lit up with thousands of fairy lights. Make a night of it with a picnic and go for a wander through the pathways of roses and twinkling fairy lights, Christmas installations and a nativity scene.
There’s nothing more festive than a night out looking at the Christmas displays. The Hills District Mums have put together a list of houses where you can go with the kids to see some beautiful Christmas lights this year – it’s updated regularly. Many streets participate annually, some raising money for charity, and it’s a great activity to do on a warm night with the kids. You’ll find a full list here, and it’s great to see local Kellyville households putting on such a wonderful show.
And now that it’s summer holidays and the kids are off school, why not pay a visit to one of our wonderful local libraries, such as Castle Hill Library, and check out their story time sessions? Or if your kids are a little older, get out some books – ask the librarians about what’s popular – so they have a book or two lying around at home to pick up when boredom strikes.
The Hills Shire is also holding a free summer reading adventure this year – visit any of our libraries to find out more.
And if you have any library fines to pay, there’s good news in the form of a library fine amnesty until December 17. Simply donate a non-perishable food item to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal when you return your overdue items between Friday 17 November and Sunday 17 December, and the library will waive your fines.
